About this Spot
Ansteys is a surf spot located in Durban, South Africa, on the Bluff about one kilometer south of Cave Rock. The spot features a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom and is suitable for all levels of surfers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot works regularly, especially during the winter months from March to October. Water temperatures are warm year-round, usually between 20°C and 27°C, so you can surf without a wetsuit. The spot is less crowded than the Durban piers, but it can still get busy, especially on weekends. Local surfers, often called the Bluff crew, are usually friendly, but it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The area is shark-protected and lifeguards are present during peak season. Access is straightforward: drive down to the Bluff from Durban and take the turnoff to the beach, where you’ll find a car park. Make sure to lock your car and keep your belongings safe. The beach is also popular with bodyboarders, swimmers, and kite surfers. Nearby surf spots include Cave Rock, Garvies, Treasure Beach, Vetchies Reef, and South Beach. For the latest surf forecast, surf report, map, and webcam updates, check online resources before heading out. Ansteys is a good spot for a casual surf session, but always be aware of your surroundings and the local vibe.
