Overview
About this Spot
Cave Rock is a surf spot located in Durban, South Africa, known for its powerful right-hand reef breaks and consistent surf conditions. The spot sits just before the Brighton Beach swimming pool, with a large rock on the left of the road marking the location. Cave Rock features two main peaks: The Pool, which breaks behind a tidal pool with thick, ledging waves and wide barrels, and The Rock, which breaks in front of the namesake Cave Rock and offers rounder tubes. The bottom is a mix of rocks and sand, and the spot works best on medium and high tides. The ideal surf forecast for Cave Rock includes a south swell, with waves ranging from overhead to triple overhead, and a northwest wind. The wave is much faster and sections more since the storms of 2006, but it still offers high performance and can get you barreled. The paddle out can be tough, especially on bigger days, and there are strong rips and undertow, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is for experienced surfers, especially those comfortable with big waves and competitive or aggressive surfing. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Crowds can thin out when the surf gets serious, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Access is straightforward, with parking available on the road overlooking the break. Be cautious of the shallow reef and water quality, especially after heavy rains. Cave Rock is close to other surf spots like Ansteys, Treasure Beach, Garvies, Vetchies Reef, and South Beach. For the latest surf report, forecast, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out. Cave Rock has a place in South African surf history, with surfers like Shaun Tomson having surfed here.
