Overview
About this Spot
Clifton 3rd Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, between Clifton 2nd and Clifton 4th Beaches. The spot is known for its sand and rock bottom, with waves that work best during medium and high tide. The surf here is generally regular, but it only gets good when a big westerly swell pushes in, which is rare. Most of the time, the waves are small and not very consistent, but on the right day in winter, you might find solid 4-foot waves that can get hollow. There are a few peaks along the beach, with the right side towards Clifton 4th Beach often offering the best conditions. The spot is usually empty, as most surfers prefer other locations, but it can be worth checking when the forecast shows a big swell. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Access to Clifton 3rd Beach is by walking down narrow stairs between residential properties, and parking is limited, so arriving early is a good idea. The water is cold, with temperatures between 12°C and 16°C, so a wetsuit is recommended. Lifeguards are present, and the beach is clean and quiet compared to other nearby spots. Alcohol is not allowed on the beach, and police patrol the area. Nearby surf spots include Clifton 4th Beach, Clifton 2nd Beach, Clifton 1st Beach, Glen Reef, and Glen Beach. Always check the surf report, forecast, and map before heading out, and use a webcam if available to see current conditions. Respect the locals, especially if the spot gets crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
