Danger Reef is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa. The spot is found near Dangers Beach and is known for its rocky reef bottom, shallow water, and presence of kelp and redbait. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The left works on any swell above 2 meters and offers a hollow takeoff into a barrel section, followed by a longer ride if the swell and offshore winds are good. The left is sensitive to wind and can close out quickly if the wind is not right. The right only works on bigger swells and gives a fast takeoff, running off the reef and along a sand-bottomed area for a longer ride. The reef is flat and shallow, and the takeoff zones for the left and right are separated by a gap. On big days, taking off deep can lead to wipeouts, but the wave is generally manageable. The spot is best surfed on a rising to high tide, as low tide can expose rocks and make the wave suck up too fast, increasing the risk of dings. Urchins, rocks, and sharks are present, so caution is needed. The area is not heavily crowded due to the spot’s inconsistency and the number of other surf spots nearby, but when it is working, you will find other surfers out. There is no strong localism, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. The beach is known for strong riptides, but the rip is far from the reef and can be avoided by paddling parallel to the shore. Lifeguards are present during summer. Access is from the main road past Muizenburg or Kalk Bay, with parking available near the tennis court or train station.
