About this Spot

Dias Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, inside the Cape Point National Park. The spot is known for its heavy shore-breaks and barrels, with a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Access to Dias Beach requires a 20-minute hike down trails, wooden paths, and stairs, and the climb back up is steep. The area is surrounded by high cliffs and there is little to no beach, just rocks and cliffs. The spot is exposed to southerly winds in summer and protected from northerly winds in winter. Swells are very consistent, and Dias Beach picks up all available swell, making it a good option when other Cape Town spots are flat. The wave length is less than 50 meters and the spot is usually empty, so crowds are rare. The spot is better suited for bodyboarders, but stand-up surfers also ride here. Rips and undertow are strong, and there have been incidents with swimmers and surfers being swept out to sea, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Sharks are present in the area. Baboons can be a nuisance, especially if you carry food, so avoid bringing food and do not leave belongings unattended. The area is home to wildlife like ostriches, dassies, and various birds. There are no facilities on the beach. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Southwest Reef, Extensions, Buffels Bay, Black Rocks, and Olifantsbos. Always be cautious of the tides and currents, and plan your session for low tide and earlier in the day to avoid strong winds.
