Overview
About this Spot
Dunes is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, about two-thirds of the way down Noordhoek Beach. To get there, you need to drive to the Noordhoek Beach car park and walk for about 25 to 30 minutes along the beach. The spot is a beach break with a sandy bottom and offers wave faces between 5 and 10 feet. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are with a southwest swell, southeast winds, and at medium to high tide. Dunes is known for its powerful, hollow, and heavy waves, which can be unpredictable and challenging. The length of the ride is usually between 50 and 150 meters. The spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. Rips and undertow are common, so be aware of strong currents. The area is unspoilt and the beach is long and wide, which means it does not get very crowded, partly because of the long walk required to reach the break. Shark sightings are common, so always stay alert in the water. Water temperatures can get cold, especially in July, when you might need a 4/3mm wetsuit, boots, and a hood. Nearby surf spots include Noordhoek Beach, The Hoek, Kakapo, Krans, and Boneyards. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to Dunes. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and make sure to follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
