Overview
About this Spot
Isla Negra is a surf spot located in Central, Chile, about 45 kilometers south of Valparaíso and 96 kilometers west of Santiago. The spot sits on a coral reef bottom with sharp rocks on the shore, so be careful when entering and exiting the water, especially at low tide. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The wave is powerful and short, with typical rides under 50 meters, but on good days it can reach up to 150 meters. Isla Negra is known for its very consistent surf, with the best conditions during the winter months. The ideal swell comes from the north-northwest, and the best wind direction is from the south-southeast. Water temperatures are cool year-round, averaging around 14°C (58°F), so a 2/3mm wetsuit is recommended. The spot is not suitable for beginners due to the size and power of the waves and the presence of rocks. It is best for intermediate surfers and up, especially during swells when the wave can get heavy. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. During summer, Isla Negra can get ultra-crowded, so respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is busy. The area is also home to the Casa de Isla Negra, the former house of Pablo Neruda, now a museum. To get to Isla Negra from Santiago, drive west to Algarrobo, then head towards Isla Negra and ask for Pablo Neruda’s house if you need directions. On the way, you’ll pass other surf spots like La Castilla, Chepica, Ahogados, La Cruz, and El Quisco Point.
