Overview
About this Spot
Punta Baja is a surf spot located in Baja North, Mexico. This spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom consists of rocks and sand, and it is best surfed during medium and high tides. The quality of the waves is considered normal, making it suitable for surfers of all levels. The spot sometimes breaks, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. Punta Baja is known for being relatively empty, so you might find yourself enjoying the waves without a crowd. Nearby, you can find another surf spot called Punta San Carlos. When planning your surf trip, it’s important to check the surf forecast and report to ensure optimal conditions. The best time to surf Punta Baja is during a northwest or southwest swell, as the winds tend to be offshore in the afternoon. Be cautious of the urchins and rocks, and consider bringing a longboard to make the most of the long-rolling swells. It’s not advisable to surf at low tide due to the presence of kelp. To reach Punta Baja, enter El Rosario, make a right at the first mercado, then a left at the first dirt road. Cross the stream using the makeshift bridge and proceed west. Continue past the village until you see a radar tower on a hill and a sign for Punta Baja. Make a left and keep to the right to avoid ending up in Punta Carlos. As you arrive at the beach, you’ll be south of the point, which is an ideal spot for setting up camp on the cliffs. A stairway leads down to the beach. The water is cold, and the winds can be strong, so bring warm clothes for the night. A local named Carlos Hernandez lives at the point and enjoys trading his ocean catches for beer. It’s a fun spot to surf, but remember to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Always be mindful of surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Respect the locals.
