Overview
About this Spot
Puerto Sandino is a surf spot located in Northwest, Nicaragua, on the Pacific coast in the León Department. The spot is near a large river mouth and is only accessible by boat, with the wave starting almost a half-mile from shore. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and the surf spot provides left waves. The wave length ranges from 300 to 500 meters, and the best conditions are during medium and high tide. The ideal swell direction is SSW, but S and SW swells also work. The main surf season is from April to September. The spot is exposed to winds from any direction, so checking the surf forecast and report before heading out is important. The water quality can change, especially after rainfall, as you are surfing in the middle of a river mouth. The wave is considered world classic and is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers due to its power and the presence of shallow reef sections. The crowd is usually moderate, with mostly visiting surfers, but it can get busy when several boats arrive at the same time. The local community is friendly, and the area is known for being safe, but always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Suicides, Pipes, Miramar, Padangs, and Miramar Sur. There are local surf resorts like Puerto Sandino Surf Resort and Miramar Surf Camp that offer boat access to the break. Playa Miramar, a small fishing village, is about 40 minutes from León and 2 hours from Managua. There is no direct access by car or parking at the spot. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. For more details, use a surf map or webcam to check the current conditions.
