About this Spot
Astillero is a surf spot located in Northwest, Nicaragua, near the border of Rivas and Carazo provinces. The spot sits close to the small fishing village of Astillero, about 15 kilometers from Popoyo. To get there, you usually need a 4×4 vehicle and a local guide from Popoyo, where you can also find surf camps that offer trips to Astillero and other nearby spots. The surf spot has a bottom made of rocks and sand, and it works on all tides. The waves are considered a regional classic, with a regular frequency and a length of less than 50 meters. The spot is mostly empty, so you can expect little to no crowd, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets busy. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The main surf breaks in the area include the river mouth break at the Chacocente River, which is known for hollow and fast waves, and Lance’s Left, a long left-hand point break a few kilometers north, accessible by boat. Playgrounds is another break north of Astillero, only reachable by boat, offering both left and right waves over a reef. The water is warm year-round. The spot is best for intermediate surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Nearby surf spots include Lance’s Left, Chacocente, Playa Guasacate, Popoyo, and Santana. The village of Astillero has a few local restaurants and basic accommodations, and you can also find activities like fishing and horseback riding on the beach.
