Overview
About this Spot
Lance’s Left is a surf spot located in Northwest, Nicaragua, near the town of El Astillero. This spot is a long, left-hand point break set in a bay backed by cliffs. The wave breaks over a coral reef bottom and is known for its length, with rides that can even be longer than 300 meters, and sometimes reaching up to 500 meters when conditions are optimal. The spot is best accessed by boat, but you can also walk from local beachfront restaurants in Astillero, though the walk is longer and you should be aware of the risk of petty theft. The shoreline has black sand that gets hot in the afternoons, so wearing sandals is a good idea. There are ocean currents and sea urchins in the area, so take care when entering the water. The wave is not suitable for beginners and is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers. Minor rights can form occasionally, but the main wave is a long left. The spot works on all tides and is very consistent throughout the year, with moderate crowds due to the harder access. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the best surf, look for swells coming from the south, southwest, or west, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet. The best wind direction is from the north, northeast, or east. Nearby surf spots include Astillero, Chacocente, Playa Guasacate, Popoyo, and Santana.
