About this Spot
Pena Rosa is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, in the San Bartolo area about 50 kilometers south of Lima city, near the 50 km marker of the Panamericana Sur highway. The spot is known for its rocky bottom with boulders and is mostly a left-hand point break, with a right sometimes rideable. The wave length is less than 50 meters. The best surf conditions are found at low to medium tides. The area is usually empty, so crowds are not common, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The water is cold, with average temperatures around 16°C, and the currents are generally light. The spot works best during the summer months, especially from November to March. To get to Pena Rosa, take the Panamericana Sur highway south, turn right at the Santa Rosa entry, and head towards El Huayco. Park as far south as possible in Santa Rosa, walk past the dry river-bed and El Huayco, and continue to the first point. If you go too far, you will reach the headland of Penascal and see the bay of Playa Norte in San Bartolo. The nearby towns of San Bartolo and Punta Negra offer services for surfers. The spot is suitable for all levels, but the strong waves and rocky bottom mean you should check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to get the latest information on conditions. The atmosphere at Pena Rosa is usually relaxed, and the spot is a bit less accessible than others in the area, which keeps the vibe easygoing. Nearby surf spots include El Huayco, Penascal, Santa Rosa, San Bartolo, and Izquierditas.
