About this Spot

Penascal is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, in the San Bartolo District, about 49 kilometers south of the city along the Panamericana Sur highway. The spot is known for its powerful right-hand reef break, with waves usually ranging from 2 to 4 meters. The wave breaks over a rocky bottom with boulders, and the takeoff can be tricky as the peak shifts with changes in swell size and direction. The wave is fast and hollow, picking up quickly from deep water and forming a thick lip. Penascal works on all swells but is one of the few spots in the area that handles a south swell well. The best surf conditions are during the autumn and winter months, from March to October, when groundswells are consistent and the best swell direction is from the southwest. Offshore winds from the east-southeast help improve the wave quality. The spot is best surfed at low and medium tides. Access is straightforward, with a short paddle from San Bartolo – Playa Norte to the point break on the north side of the bay. The area is usually empty, but always respect the locals, especially if the spot gets crowded. Remember to check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The wave is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers due to its power, the presence of rocks, and strong rips and undertow. The length of the ride is between 50 and 150 meters. Getting caught on the inside can be tough, so be aware of the conditions. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the forecast match your level. Nearby surf spots include Pena Rosa, El Huayco, Santa Rosa, San Bartolo, and Izquierditas.
