Overview
About this Spot
Sanguessuga is a surf spot located in Alentejo, Portugal. This spot features a coral reef bottom and primarily produces left-breaking waves. The surf conditions at Sanguessuga are highly dependent on extremely high tides that occur during the summer months, as the reef is exposed throughout the year, with a prominent rock visible above the water. For optimal surfing conditions, it is essential to wait for the right tide, swell, and offshore wind combination. The wave quality is classified as world-class, but it is important to note that this spot is suitable only for experienced surfers, particularly bodyboarders. The wave length is less than 50 meters, and it is known for its extreme hollow pit, which can create opportunities for deep tube rides. However, the wave can become dangerous when it exceeds 5 feet, often leading to poor breaking conditions and increased risk of injury. The recommended approach is to paddle for over 20 minutes or utilize a boat to access the spot. Sanguessuga is located on the road from São Torpes to Porto Covo, near a fish restaurant and a small bridge, making it relatively accessible. It is advisable to wear a helmet due to the potential for injury. Surf etiquette should always be observed, especially in crowded conditions, and surfers should assess their skills against the difficulty of the spot before entering the water. Additionally, the area is known for its low frequency of surfable days, making it a rare opportunity for those fortunate enough to catch it in good conditions. Nearby spots include Burrinho, Praia da Vieirinha, Sao Torpes, Porto Covo, and Aivados. Respect the locals.
