Overview
About this Spot
Elephant Rock is a surf spot located in southeast Sri Lanka, about 4 kilometers south of Arugam Bay. The spot is named after a large rock formation that sticks out in the sea and resembles an elephant. To get there, you can take a tuk-tuk from Arugam Bay to Crocodile Rock, then walk about 15 minutes down the beach to reach Elephant Rock. The area is mostly undeveloped, with wide sandy beaches and coastal lagoons. The surf spot features a gentle right-hand point break with a sandy bottom, making it suitable for all levels, especially beginners and intermediates. The waves usually range from 2 to 6 feet, and rides can be between 50 and 150 meters. The spot works on all tides. Boards like beginner boards, softboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards are all suitable here. The best time to surf is during the dry season from April to October, with the most consistent conditions from May to September. The best swell directions are northeast, east, southeast, and south, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet needed for good waves. The best wind directions are southwest and west. The spot is not usually crowded, but you might find a few surfers in the water. Nearby surf spots include Peanuts Farm, Arugam Bay, Arugam Beach, Panama, and Pottuvil Point. If the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Keep an eye on your belongings, as there are sometimes locals around with bad intentions. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Avoid swimming in the lagoon because of crocodiles. Climbing Elephant Rock gives you a good view of the coastline.
