About this Spot

Penguins is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa. The spot is found near the well-known penguin colony at Boulders Beach, close to Simon’s Town. The bottom is made up of coral reef and rocks, and there are sea urchins in the area, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The wave at Penguins is a left, and it is similar to a lefthand version of Innerpool in Mossel Bay. The spot is very fickle and only works when there are big southeast swells, so it rarely breaks. When it does, the wave length is between 50 and 150 meters. The best conditions are during medium and high tide. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. The crowd is usually light, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and always follow the surf etiquette. Sharks have been seen in the area, so stay alert and check the latest surf report and forecast before heading out. There are a few other reef breaks nearby that work when the swell is big. To find the wave, look for the penguin colony. Nearby surf spots include Betty’s Bay, Silver Sands, Waterfalls, Moonlight Bay, and Pringle Bay. For more details, you can check a surf map or webcam for current conditions. Remember to respect the environment and the wildlife, especially the penguins, and follow any local rules. Always check the difficulty of the spot and the surf forecast before you go out to make sure you are prepared for the conditions.
