About this Spot
Paranoia is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, near Rooi-Els in the Western Cape. The spot is found at the end of the beach where the river meets the sea, and you reach it by driving from Gordon’s Bay to Koeel Bay, passing over a small bridge. Parking is available in the area near the small bridge. The bottom is made up of boulders and rocks, and there are two reefs: the first reef gives the impression that the wave is about to break, but it actually breaks on the inside reef. The spot is known for sometimes breaking and can hold a good amount of swell, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. Paranoia is generally empty, but when it gets crowded, it is important to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The spot is best suited for intermediate surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The surf spot provides left waves. Paranoia works on all tides and is exposed to groundswells from the south, with optimal conditions when southeast swells meet east-southeast offshore winds. The water temperature ranges from 14.6°C to 18.1°C, so a 3/2mm wetsuit is recommended. Hazards include submerged rocks and the presence of sharks, so stay alert in the water. The spot is less crowded compared to other surf spots in the region. Nearby surf spots include Kogel Bay Beach, Caves, Jerilotto, Rooi Els, and Virgin Point.
