Overview
About this Spot
Pismo Beach is a surf spot located in the central coast of California. The spot features a long sandy beach with the Pismo Beach Pier as a central landmark. The bottom is sand, and the waves break along several peaks, with the most consistent surf found on the north side of the pier. The south side of the pier and the Addie Street sandbar offer quieter waves, which are good for beginners. The area around the pier can get crowded, especially with locals, so it’s important to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The spot is suitable for all levels, with plenty of space for beginners and more challenging sections for experienced surfers. The waves can be mushy on some days and well-shaped on others, and during winter swells, the spot can barrel and get more powerful, sometimes closing out when the swell is big. Rips and undertow can be present, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The best conditions are usually at medium and high tide, with the best swell coming from the southwest and west, and the best wind direction being northeast or east. The minimum swell height for good waves is about 2 feet. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride can range from 50 to 150 meters, and the frequency of surfable waves is regular. The beach is popular with locals, surf schools, and beginners, and there are surf shops nearby for lessons and board rentals. Parking is available at the foot of the pier. Nearby surf spots include Oceano, Sewers, Hippo Rock, Port San Luis, and Main Street. Always check the difficulty of the spot and the current conditions before entering the water.
