Overview
About this Spot
Sandspit is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. It is situated at the end of the breakwater in Santa Barbara Harbor. Surfers can access Sandspit by walking past the harbor and following a paved path to the end of the breakwater. The spot features a sand bottom and can be surfed at all tides. Sandspit is suitable for surfers of all experience levels and offers waves with a length of 50 to 150 meters. The spot is known as a regional classic and typically has few surfers in the lineup. On big days, paddling out can be challenging. During good ground swells in October, Sandspit offers hollow and consistent waves. If one peak is crowded, surfers can easily walk down the beach to find another peak. However, the exposed beach is often affected by wind, which can blow out the waves. Wind swells are not ideal for surfing at this location. Nearby surf spots include Hazard Canyon, Left Spot, Widdows, The Pit Morro Bay, and A-Beach Morro Bay. To reach Sandspit, head to Montana De Oro state park past Los Osos. Continue until you see a gate and a sign that says ‘Sand Spit’ and ‘Day use only.’ Follow the road to the parking lot, then walk down the path towards the ocean. Parking is also available near the Santa Barbara Harbor entrance and on W Cabrillo Blvd. When the waves are smaller, beginners can enjoy the spot, but larger waves present more serious challenges. The area is also popular for activities like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Remember to check the surf forecast and report before visiting. If you’re planning to surf at Sandspit, be sure to assess your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your level. When the spot is crowded, it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Always check a surf map or webcam for current conditions before your visit.
