About this Spot

Mouse Rock is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. This reef break is situated approximately 0.3 miles north of the Cayucos Pier. The spot provides both left and right waves. Mouse Rock is known for its large, powerful waves that can reach heights of 16 feet or more, making it suitable only for expert surfers. The waves at this spot are hollow, fast, and powerful, offering short rides that last about 5 to 6 seconds before dissipating into deep water. The bottom consists of coral reef and sand, and the spot works best with medium tides. Mouse Rock rarely breaks and is typically empty when it does. The wave quality is considered epic when conditions align. Accessing Mouse Rock usually requires towing out with a boat, jet ski, or wave runner. Alternatively, surfers can jump off the Cayucos Pier and paddle toward the horizon, which can take over 20 minutes. The best conditions occur in spring and summer when offshore winds from the east combine with groundswells from the west-northwest. Surfers should be cautious of potential hazards such as sharp rocks, sea urchins, and the rare presence of sharks. Parking is available at the Cayucos Parking Lot. Nearby surf spots include Cayucos, A-Beach Morro Bay, The Pit Morro Bay, Widdows, and Sandspit. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, which is rare, remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Mouse Rock is best suited for experienced surfers seeking a remote and demanding surf experience. Always check the surf forecast, report, and map before heading out. While there are no webcams specifically for Mouse Rock, checking nearby spot conditions can give you an idea of what to expect.
