About this Spot

Asilomar is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s a narrow, mile-long stretch of sandy shoreline with rocky coves. The beach has a sand and rock bottom, suitable for low and medium tides. Asilomar is very consistent and offers waves less than 50m in length. It’s an intermediate-level spot that usually sees few surfers. The surf spot has three main areas: Roadsides, Middles, and the Reef. Roadsides is a right-hander at the north end. Middles offers a peak in the middle of the beach. The Reef on the south end features a left that can hold up to around 8 feet. The best time to surf the beachbreak is during medium to high tide, while the reefs work better at low tide. The optimal swell direction is Northwest, but it can handle North and South swells too. The water at Asilomar is colder than other nearby beaches due to upwelling from Monterey Canyon. There are no bathrooms on the beach, but facilities are available at the Asilomar Conference Grounds. Nearby spots include Lovers Point, The Wharf, Ghost Tree, Del Monte Beach, and Seaside. The spot is part of the Asilomar State Marine Reserve, which prohibits collecting shells and live specimens. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when it’s crowded. Asilomar can offer long rides, with some waves connecting through the bay for up to one minute. The spot can get bigger waves compared to other places in Monterey. It’s located on the coastal drive south of Cannery Row, marked by a sign for Asilomar State Beach. For the latest surf conditions, check the Asilomar surf forecast, report, and webcam. A surf map can help you locate the different peaks and plan your session.
