About this Spot

Makapuu Beach is a surf spot located in Oahu East Side, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s a world-class break known for its very consistent surf. The beach is approximately 1,000 feet long, featuring golden sand bordered by black Koolau cliffs. Makapuu is suitable for all levels of surfers, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. The surf break consists of sand and rocks, and low tide offers the best conditions. Waves are typically less than 50m in length. The spot is usually not crowded, with few surfers in the lineup. However, it’s crucial to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot gets busier. Makapuu Beach offers great surf for all, with ample parking just a minute’s walk from the beach. There’s a point break that goes left for surfers, while the rest of the beach is mostly used by bodyboarders and bodysurfers due to the medium to shallow sandy bottom. A right surf break in front of the parking lot is also available. When the swell direction is right and the wind is calm, conditions can become excellent. On weekdays, you’ll find fewer crowds compared to weekends. Facilities at the beach include restrooms, showers, picnic areas, and lifeguards on duty. It’s advisable to bring your own food as there are no stores or restaurants in the immediate area, except for Sea Life Park, which can be expensive. The beach offers views of Kaohikaipu Islet and Manana Island (Rabbit Island), a sanctuary for native Hawaiian seabirds. For those interested in more than just surfing, the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail nearby provides beautiful coastal views and whale-watching opportunities from December to May. Remember to always check the current surf forecast and report before your session. A surf map or webcam can be helpful for assessing conditions. Nearby surf spots include Baby Makapuu, Sandy Beach, Turtles, and China Walls.
