Overview
About this Spot
Chuns Reef is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated between Jocko’s and Waimea Bay, featuring a coral reef and sand bottom. Chuns Reef is considered a regional classic, suitable for intermediate surfers. The wave length ranges from 150 to 300 meters. The spot is very consistent and can be surfed at all tides. Surfers should be aware that the area is known for its rocks and shallow, uneven reef. The left break is generally more forgiving, with a deeper water, while the right break is faster and shorter, but can be shallow with turbulent currents on the inside. Chuns Reef is often crowded, especially during the winter months when the North Shore’s waves are at their best. It’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access to the beach is straightforward, with parking available along Kamehameha Highway where permitted. However, it’s advisable to bring a junk car as the area is known for vehicle break-ins. The spot performs best with a northwest to north-northwest swell direction and calm to light east to south winds. Waves typically range from chest-high to overhead. A lifeguard is on duty, and the beach is also suitable for activities like fishing, snorkeling, and swimming. The water quality is generally clean, though run-off can occur during heavy rain. Nearby surf spots include Jockos Point, Leftovers, Laniakea, Aligator Rock, and Waimea Bay. Chuns Reef is the second opening on the left-hand side when heading toward Waimea, after Laniakea.
