Overview
About this Spot
Waimea Bay is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Waimea Bay is situated at the mouth of the Waimea River, with Waimea Valley extending to the east. The bay features a coral reef and sand bottom, offering epic wave quality suitable for pros. The spot’s length is less than 50m, and it typically sees few surfers. Nearby spots include Log Cabins, Aligator Rock, Leftovers, Rock Piles, and Off The Wall. Waimea Bay is renowned for its significant role in big-wave surfing history. During winter months (November to April), the bay experiences large swells, with waves often reaching heights of 20 feet or more. These conditions make it challenging, primarily suitable for experienced surfers. The spot can be split into three waves: ‘Waimea’ itself (a mountain of water), Pinballs (along the rocks on small days), and the Waimea Shorebreak (nearly unsurfable). Strong rips and undertow are present, requiring caution. Localism can be an issue, so respect for locals is crucial. When the spot is crowded, it’s important to follow surf etiquette. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Waimea Bay hosted the development of big wave surfing, with the first riders tackling its giant waves on November 7, 1957. The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau takes place here when conditions allow. In summer, the bay transforms into a calm location ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Waimea Valley, across the street, offers a botanical garden and cultural center. For those planning to surf or visit, arrive early as parking fills up quickly. Amenities include restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards on duty daily. Remember to check the surf forecast and report before your visit, and consult a surf map for precise locations. Some webcams may be available to view current conditions.
