Overview
About this Spot
Rock Piles is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated between Log Cabins and Off-The-Wall, directly in front of a pile of rocks, which gives it its name. Rock Piles breaks over a coral reef bottom and is best surfed during low to medium tide. The spot is known for its powerful waves and is considered a regional classic. It’s suitable for intermediate surfers and offers regular surf conditions. The wave length is typically less than 50m. Rock Piles is known for its hollow and powerful nature, breaking over an uneven reef. The waves can reach 8 to 10 feet (around 2.5 to 3 meters) or larger, and as it gets bigger, the break moves further out, making for a longer paddle. The spot works best on NW to WNW angled swells for the left, and more northerly angled swells for the right. During big swells, it’s not uncommon for Kam Highway to get washed out at this spot. Accessing Rock Piles is relatively easy; you can park at the lot next to the lifeguard tower or along the Kam Highway where it’s allowed. The crowd is usually minimal, with many days seeing only a few surfers in the lineup. However, it’s important to check the surf etiquette when the spot gets crowded and always respect the locals. Be aware of rips and undertow, and watch out for rocks. The takeoff is slopey and can create a huge bowl on the inside that usually pinches. On rare occasions, sand movement can create favorable conditions, allowing the wave to peel for a good distance. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Rock Piles is situated right in front of the first lifeguard tower before Off-the-Wall, Backdoor, Pipeline, and Ehukai Beach Park. Remember to time the sets when paddling out to avoid exhaustion. While the lifeguards keep a close eye on surfers, it’s highly recommended not to get stuck on the inside due to the abundance of rocks. Always check the latest surf forecast and report before heading out to Rock Piles.
