About this Spot

Haleiwa is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Situated on a coral reef bottom, Haleiwa offers waves suitable for intermediate surfers. This regional classic is known for its very consistent surf and wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The spot works best on low and medium tides. Haleiwa can get crowded, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The main break features a V-shaped reef about 300 yards offshore, creating a peak with both right and left-breaking waves. The right-breaking waves are particularly favored for their rippable sections. As wave sizes increase, the right can become hollow and heavy, offering deep tubes. A strong rip current influences the wave’s intensity, making positioning and paddling strategies crucial. Ideal conditions include northwest swells with light to moderate offshore winds and a mid-tide. Wave faces can range from chest-high to double overhead. Be aware of rips, undertow, and rocks in the area. On smaller days, there are perfect reforms on the inside for beginners. However, on good-sized days, the wave can be deceptively heavy and fast. Keep an eye out for sneaker sets to avoid getting caught inside. Haleiwa is part of the larger North Shore community, which is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. The area preserves its old plantation town character in many buildings. To reach the spot, turn on the side road next to Haleiwa Joes / Haleiwa Boat Harbor. Ali’i Beach Park is on the right, and you can paddle out left of the jetty. Remember to always check the latest surf forecast and report before heading out, and consider using surf maps or webcams to assess conditions.
