About this Spot

Popoia Island is a surf spot located in Oahu East Side, Hawaii. Also known as Flat Island, this four-acre islet sits about a quarter mile off Kailua Beach Park on Oahu’s east coast. The spot features a left point break that wraps around the coral reef bottom, with a shorter right break on the opposite side of the island. The surf works on very small swell and can handle big northeast swells during winter months. Both sides of the island work, but the south side provides better everyday surfing conditions. On larger days of 5+ feet, the back of the island offers rides exceeding 100 meters across the back. The spot is suitable for all experience levels and good for beginners, accommodating shortboarders, longboarders, paddleboarders, and even kayakers. You can expect very consistent waves here, with realistic expectations of catching waves at least 15 days per month. The forecast shows best swell directions from north, northeast, and east with a minimum swell height of 2 feet. Best wind directions are from south, southwest, and west. Medium and high tides provide optimal conditions. To reach the spot, park at Kailua Beach Park and paddle out towards the small island in the harbor. Be aware that parking can be crowded on weekends, so arrive early or park on the street without blocking local driveways. The atmosphere is relaxed with local families and kids surfing, but it’s also popular with tourists renting boards. The crowd level is moderate, and you should respect locals and follow proper surf etiquette when crowded. Watch for shallow water on low tides as the sharp reef below can cause cuts. Be prepared to navigate around beginners, tourists on rented paddleboards, and kayakers. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The island is also a protected seabird sanctuary, so avoid disturbing nesting birds.
