Overview
About this Spot
Pounders is a surf spot located in Oahu East Side, Hawaii, near the town of Laie and also known as Laie Beach Park. The spot is right off Kamehameha Highway and is recognized for its consistent and powerful shorebreak, with a sandy bottom and a wedge that forms off a cliff wall. The waves here are mainly for bodysurfing and bodyboarding, as the shorebreak can be strong enough to break surfboards. The spot is best suited for intermediate and experienced surfers, and the wave length is usually less than 50 meters. The surf is regular, and the crowd is moderate, mostly locals, so it’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. The area is known for localism, and visitors should be aware that sometimes non-locals may be asked to leave. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best swell directions are north, northeast, and east, with a minimum swell height of three feet needed for good conditions. The best wind directions are west and northwest. The spot works on all tides. Nearby surf spots include Malaekahana, Graters, Turtle Bay, Radz, and Velzy Land. The beach features a wide stretch of white sand and is backed by ironwood trees, with a limestone cliff called Pali Kiloi’a at the southern end. There are picnic tables, restrooms, and showers available, and parking is close to the beach. There are no lifeguards on duty, so always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The strong currents and undertow can be challenging, especially in winter when the surf is higher. Only paddle out if you are confident in your ability to handle the conditions.
