Overview
About this Spot
Kolekole is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated near the Kolekole Stream, which is fed by Akaka Falls. The waves at Kolekole break over a bottom of boulders, lava, and coral. The spot is suitable for surfing at all tides and can accommodate surfers of various experience levels. Kolekole offers regular waves with a length of less than 50m. The spot is known for its fast and powerful waves, which can be particularly challenging when large swells hit. Surfers should be cautious of the shallow areas near the shore and be aware of steel construction cables in the water, remnants of a past bridge construction project. The surf forecast, report, and webcam can provide valuable information for planning your surf session. To access Kolekole, drive north from Hilo, past Honomu at the 14 mile marker, and turn left at the Kolekole beach park sign. The beach itself is small, featuring black sand and rocks. During rough ocean conditions, high surf can wash over the beach and into the stream. Strong currents make ocean swimming inadvisable, but the Kolekole Stream offers swimming opportunities. The area is known for its scenic beauty, with the stream and nearby waterfalls enhancing the tropical atmosphere. Surfers should always check their skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match their level. It’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, and occasional shark sightings. Kolekole is also a popular spot for bodyboarding and bodysurfing. The best surf conditions typically occur with an east-northeast swell combined with an offshore wind from the west-southwest. Nearby surf spots include Secrets, Hakalau, Papaikou Mill, Honoli’i, and Tombstones. Kolekole Beach Park, where the surf spot is located, is scheduled to reopen in April 2024 after upgrades to address lead contamination in the soil. The park is situated about 3 miles downstream from Akaka Falls and features a waterfall on the Ka’ahakini stream that drops into the main Kolekole Stream. The Hawaii Belt Road passes over the park on a high bridge, providing a unique backdrop to the surf spot.
