Tombstones is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. It’s situated near Hilo and can be accessed by entering the water at Honolii Beach Park, followed by a 30-minute paddle to the point by the cliff on the right. The spot provides both left and right waves. Tombstones is known for its powerful waves, which can reach up to 10 feet (3.5 meters) in size. The sea bottom consists of boulders, and the area is surrounded by cliffs. Surfers should be quick with their turns to avoid the rocks. The best conditions occur when a northeast swell combines with an offshore wind from the southwest. Water temperature ranges from 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F) year-round, making wetsuits unnecessary. Tombstones is considered a regional classic but only breaks sometimes. The wave length is less than 50m. The spot is usually empty, but it’s important to respect locals and follow surf etiquette when it’s crowded. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards including rocks, rip currents, and the presence of sharks. Due to its challenging conditions, Tombstones is recommended for intermediate to experienced surfers. When big (10ft+), it’s a very powerful break that starts at the point and moves towards the huge boulders by the cliff. The left can offer a long, nice ride.
