Overview
About this Spot
Banyons is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated along Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona, right in front of the Kona Bali Kai condos and a Banyan tree. Banyons is easily accessible from the main road. The spot features a coral reef bottom and works best on medium to high tides. It’s considered a regional classic and is suitable for intermediate surfers. Banyons is very consistent, offering waves less than 50m in length. The spot is known for its clear water and abundance of fish. Surfers should be cautious of urchins in the water and a rock on the last part of the left. The right break tends to hold its line, offering turn sections and potential barrels, while the left can provide a barrel on takeoff but often ends in a closeout. Banyons can get crowded, especially when the waves are chest high or above. It’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Don’t drop in on others, and if you wipe out on takeoff, immediately paddle to the channel. The spot can be hollow and shallow, so check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your level. Parking is available along Ali’i Drive. Nearby surf spots include Lymans, Magics, Kona Tiki, Honls, and Kahalu’u. The beach area features a small sandy shore, lawn, picnic table, shade tree, and a patio area with tables and chairs. Banyons receives south to southwest swells in summer and northwest to west-northwest swells in winter. Always check the surf forecast and report before heading out. Remember to respect the environment and other surfers to ensure a positive experience for everyone at this popular Big Island surf spot.
