About this Spot

Pine Trees is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated approximately seven miles north of Kailua-Kona. It’s considered a regional classic and is suitable for intermediate surfers. The spot is very consistent and offers waves with a length of 50 to 150 meters. Pine Trees is known for its few surfers, making it less crowded compared to other spots. The beach has a rocky, reef-bottomed shoreline. Wind conditions are best when calm or offshore from an easterly direction, with mornings generally offering light winds and clean conditions. Access to the beach has improved with a paved road now leading directly to it. Surfing at Pine Trees requires caution due to the presence of urchins, rips, undertows, and rocks. It’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot gets crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. The area around Pine Trees is rich in cultural history, featuring ancient Hawaiian sites such as fish ponds, petroglyphs, and a canoe slide. While swimming is not recommended due to the rocky bottom and strong shore break, the beach is excellent for surfing, barbecues, gatherings, and watching the sunset.
