The spot is situated near other surf breaks like Kohala Lighthouse, Swimming Pools, Kapaniah, Keokea Beach Park, and Hapuna. To reach Coast Guard, drive towards Hawi town from Kawaihae, pass the gated community of Puakea Bay Ranch, and take the next left. Follow the pothole-filled road to the bottom, where you’ll find a cement driveway with a dirt parking lot and a white picket fence. The break is directly in front of the parking area. Coast Guard has been featured in surf videos, including ‘The Fifth Symphony Document’ with Kelly Slater and Shane Dorian. The spot typically offers powerful and fast waves, often reaching heights between 2 to 5 meters (6 to 16 feet) or more. Optimal wind directions for surfing are from the south and southeast, while ideal swell directions are from the north, northeast, and northwest.
