Overview
About this Spot
Pohoiki is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Pohoiki, also known as Isaac Hale Beach Park, is situated in the Puna district. The area is notable for its black sand beach, formed after the 2018 volcanic eruption. This event significantly altered the landscape, affecting the previously known surf breaks like Bowls, Shacks, and Dead Trees. The spot features a coral reef bottom and is considered a regional classic. Pohoiki offers waves suitable for all levels of experience, with a wave length ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The spot typically sees few surfers, making it less crowded compared to other locations. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rocks, and the presence of sharks. The water near the peak can be very warm due to thermal activity from the lava. When surfing at Pohoiki, it’s crucial to respect the locals and be mindful of potential localism. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. If the spot becomes crowded, it’s important to follow proper surf etiquette. For parking, you can use the area near the boat launch. However, it’s advisable not to leave valuables in your vehicle. To access Pohoiki, drive straight down from Pahoa to Isaac Hale Park. The boat launch area leads to First, Second, and a challenging Third Bay. Alternatively, turning left instead of right at the boat ramp leads to the Bowls and Shacks areas. Nearby surf spots include Richardsons, 4 Miles, Chocks, Bayfront, and Hilo Breakwall. It’s worth noting that access to Pohoiki has been affected by volcanic activity, with some roads being overrun by lava. As of late 2018, a new road between MacKenzie State Park and Pohoiki was cleared. Visitors should be aware that GPS directions may not be reliable due to these changes. The park offers amenities such as parking, portable restrooms, and a lifeguard tower. However, visitors should bring their own drinking water. Ocean conditions can be hazardous, with strong currents and a dangerous shore break on the new black sand beach. Always exercise caution and enter the water at your own risk when surfing at Pohoiki.
