Mera is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture. The spot is known for its left-hand reef breaks and works only with big typhoon swell, breaking just a few times each year, usually during the summer months when the conditions line up. The ideal swell direction is from the south, and the best wind direction is from the northeast. The waves at Mera can range from chest to double overhead size. The spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is made up of sharp coral reef, and there is a vertical rock and concrete retaining wall near the break, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The paddle out is from the nearby fishing port, and you need to navigate around the harbor entrance, which can be tricky, especially when the swell is big. Mera is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The spot is dangerous, so do not surf alone and always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The local vibe is protective, and the spot is rarely crowded, but when it is, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Water quality is generally clean and clear. There are convenience stores and a supermarket nearby for supplies. Access to Mera is by car, about 100 kilometers from Tokyo, with tolls around 2,000 yen.
