About this Spot

Nagai is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in Kanagawa Prefecture. The spot is known for its coral reef bottom and is considered a regional classic for surfing. The surf spot provides right waves. Nagai sometimes breaks and is most consistent when typhoon swells hit the area, especially when other nearby spots like Shonan are maxed out. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is usually empty, offering a quiet session. The best conditions are found with a southwest swell and northeast winds, and the spot works at low and medium tides. You can surf it at around 4 feet during low tide, but it starts to get more powerful when the waves are overhead. Waves have been seen up to 15 feet, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The entry is from the end of the headland, with a short walk south and entering the water to the left. Submerged rocks are present, so be aware of hazards in the water. The area was formerly a US Navy Housing tract and is now used by locals. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette. The spot is recommended for intermediate surfers due to the reef and wave power. For surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check reliable sources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Jogashima, Osaki, Inamuragasaki, Shichirigahama, and Shonan. Always check the difficulty of the spot and the current surf report to make sure you are prepared for the conditions.
