Overview
About this Spot
Playa Grande is a surf spot located in Central Peru, Peru, in the Ancash region, about 336 kilometers north of Lima and close to the Pan-American Highway. To reach the spot, take a one-kilometer sand road detour from the highway. The area is remote and usually empty, offering a quiet surf experience. The spot is known for its fast, tubular waves that break over a shallow coral reef, with a take-off that is steep and challenging. The wave length is less than 50 meters and the spot is best suited for intermediate and experienced surfers. The spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is rocky and the reef is very shallow, even at high tide, so caution is needed. The best surf conditions are during medium and high tide, especially in the autumn months when the forecast and report show more consistent swells. The ideal swell direction is south-southwest, with offshore winds from the northwest. Water temperatures range from about 15.8°C in June to 25.1°C in January, averaging around 18°C. Access is easier with a 4×4 vehicle due to the sand road. Nearby surf spots include Vesique and Bermejo. Always check the surf map, forecast, and report before heading out, and use a webcam if available to see real-time conditions. Respect the locals, especially if the spot gets crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. The lineup is rocky and the barrel is powerful and dry, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. No alternative names, main peaks, or historical trivia are available for this spot.
