Needles is situated near other surf spots like Cannon Beach, Arcadia, Indian Head, Seaside Point, and Seaside Cove. When surfing at Needles, be aware of rips, undertow, and rocks. The spot is accessible from the Tolovana Beach parking lot, which is free and safe. To reach the surf, walk north on the beach towards Haystack Rock, a prominent 235 ft sea stack. Paddle out about 500 yards south of the rock, but stay cautious of the nearby rocks. Needles can be a good alternative when other spots are flat, though the wave quality is not exceptional. The area is mostly frequented by families and kids enjoying the beach. Cannon Beach, where Needles is located, has a rich history dating back to the Lewis and Clark expedition. The town was originally named Elk Creek but was later renamed due to a naval cannon that washed ashore from a shipwreck. Always check the surf forecast and report before visiting.
