Surfers can reach the beach via paths leading to the rocks on the north side. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. The area is known for its potential shark presence, so stay alert. On great days, you might observe alongshore waves moving from right to left. During mid to high tide, a rip current along the rocks can help surfers reach the break. On big days, waves may break about 100 to 200 yards south of the point. Historically, the area’s most famous resident was composer Ernest Bloch. In June 2012, a 165-ton floating dock from the 2011 Japanese tsunami washed ashore, briefly becoming a tourist attraction. Agate Beach is named for the agates found on the beaches between Newport and Yaquina Head.
