About this Spot
Indian Head is a surf spot located in Northwest, Oregon. The spot provides both left and right waves. It features a bottom composed of rocks and sand, and can be surfed at all tides. Indian Head is suitable for surfers of all experience levels and is known for its very consistent waves. The wave length is typically less than 50 meters. This spot is usually uncrowded, offering a more peaceful surfing experience. Nearby surf spots include Seaside Point, Cannon Beach, Seaside Cove, Needles, and Arcadia. Indian Head is part of the Oregon Coast, which stretches approximately 362 miles from California to the Columbia River. The area is known for its scenic beauty, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Oregon Coast Range to the east. When surfing here, be aware of potential rips, undertow, and the presence of rocks. Sharks have been spotted in the area, so stay alert. On bigger days, using the rip on the north side, just past the area known as ‘the russian kids,’ along the rocks, can be helpful. The spot is sheltered from northwest winds and can get popular during summer months. It’s best suited for longboarding on smaller days. Indian Head offers a secluded feel, enclosed by rocks on each side. For access, head south on Highway 101 to the first Cannon Beach exit, then follow the signs to the state park. Note that there’s a $3 parking fee. Always check the surf forecast and report before your visit. Remember to respect local surfers and follow proper surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your surfing level. The Oregon Coast is known for its free beach access, thanks to the Oregon Beach Bill of 1967.
