Hiriketiya is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka. The spot sits in a small, horseshoe-shaped bay near Dikwella, about 21 kilometers from Matara and roughly 200 kilometers south of Colombo. The nearest town is Dikwella, which is about 2 kilometers away, and you can get there by bus from Matara or by tuk-tuk. The bay is about 500 meters long and is surrounded by palm trees and greenery. The main surf break at Hiriketiya is a left-hand reef break that can hold up to 6 feet, with rides reaching up to 350 meters. The bottom is made up of boulders. The spot works on all tides and is considered a regional classic. The wave is not good for beginners, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The spot is best for intermediate and advanced surfers. Boards like shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro boards are commonly used here. The wave is very consistent. The spot can get crowded, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The best swell direction is from the southeast, south, or southwest, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet needed for good waves. The best wind direction is from the north, northeast, or east. Near Hiriketiya, you can find other surf spots like Dondra, Kingfisher, Matara, Turtle Eco Beach, and Madiha Left. The best time to surf here is from November to April during the dry season, but the bay stays consistent even in the off-season.
