Point Dume is a surf spot located in Los Angeles County, California. This regional classic spot features a bottom composed of rocks and sand, suitable for surfing at all tides. The spot is best suited for intermediate and experienced surfers, not recommended for beginners. Shortboards are the preferred board type here. Point Dume sometimes breaks, offering waves with a length of 50 to 150 meters. The spot can get moderately crowded, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For optimal surf conditions, look for south or southwest swells with a minimum height of 3 feet, combined with northwest or north winds. Nearby surf spots include Westward Beach, Little Dume, Drainpipes, Zuma Beach, and Latigo Point. Point Dume is a promontory on the coast of Malibu, forming the northern end of Santa Monica Bay. It offers views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Catalina Island. The point was named by George Vancouver in 1793, honoring Padre Francisco Dumetz. Historically, the area was used for whale processing in the 1930s. The northwesternmost tip of Point Dume is designated as a nature preserve, with limited parking available along Cliffside Drive. The area is known for its diverse wildlife, including various marine creatures in its tidepools, as well as land animals like coyotes, skunks, and numerous bird species. Offshore, the waters are home to marine life including sand sharks, bottlenose dolphins, and gray whales. Point Dume also features some easy rock climbing routes, popular among novice climbers.
