Overview
About this Spot
Boca da Barra is a surf spot located in Bahia, Brazil, at the mouth of the River Contas in Itacaré. The spot is known for its long waves that can reach up to 2 kilometers during the best conditions. The bottom is sandy, and the waves are most consistent with southeast to east swells, especially during low and medium tides. The best wind direction is from the southwest. The surf spot provides right waves. The water temperature is warm all year, usually between 25.9°C and 29°C, so you do not need a wetsuit. To reach the break, you need to paddle out for about 20 to 30 minutes from Concha Beach, or you can use a boat. The waves break far from the coastline, and the area is usually uncrowded. Boca da Barra is not recommended for beginners because of strong currents and the need for solid paddling skills, especially when the swell is over 6 to 8 feet. On big swells, the waves can break outside for both sides, and you can ride lefts to the channel, but the rights offer some of the longest rides on the Brazilian coast. The spot is considered a regional classic and is very consistent, with wave lengths between 150 and 300 meters. Hazards include strong currents, falling tides on big swells, and the presence of sharks. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Boca da Barra is easy to access by walking from anywhere in the city. Nearby surf spots include Pontal, Praia da Resende, Tiririca, Prainha, and Jeribucaçu. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local resources before heading out.
