About this Spot

Stella Maris is a surf spot located in Bahia, Brazil, in the city of Salvador, near the International Airport area. The spot is known for its sandy bottom and consistent surf, with waves that can reach up to 2.5 meters on the right swell. The spot provides both left and right waves. The wave is not considered hard, but on good days it can get hollow and fast, especially on the lower tides when the shallow sand bar makes the wave pitch. On very low tides, the wave tends to close out and can be heavy. The best months for surfing are April, May, August, and September, when the winds are lighter and offshore conditions are more common, usually in the morning before the wind turns. The surf is consistent and works on all tides, but the wind is often onshore, which can affect the quality of the waves. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The water is warm all year round. On weekends and during the summer, the beach can get crowded, and the surf lineup can be busy. There are beach huts along the shore where you can find local food and drinks. Parking is available right in front of the break, and you can see your car from the lineup. Public buses to Stella Maris run from the main beach lanes in Salvador, heading north from Barra to Itapuã, and the bus signs say Praia do Flamengo. The beach is also known for its natural pools at low tide and is surrounded by coconut groves and native vegetation. Stella Maris has a history of hosting big national surf contests since the 1980s. Nearby surf spots include Jaguaribe, Corsário, Barravento, Espanhol, and Farol da Barra, most of which are reef breaks. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
