About this Spot

Uluwatu is a surf spot located in Bali, Indonesia, renowned for its consistent and diverse surf breaks. The spot provides left waves. Situated on the southwestern tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu features several distinct sections, each offering unique wave characteristics. The name Uluwatu comes from ‘ulu’, meaning ‘lands end’, and ‘watu’, meaning ‘rock’. The spot was discovered as a surfing destination in 1972 during the filming of ‘Morning of the Earth’, a classic surf film. Steve Cooney surfed the first wave in Uluwatu’s history at age 15, capturing it on film. The series of wave breaks includes five main sections: The Bombie, Temples, Outside Corner, Racetracks, and The Peak. The Peak, located in front of the cave entrance, is the most consistent break and works best at mid to high tide. Racetracks offers fast, long sections with makeable barrels, especially at low tide. Outside Corner comes alive during large swells at low tide, providing long, fast rides for experienced surfers. The Bombie, the most exposed break, can produce waves up to 40 feet during significant swells. Temples, the least crowded section, requires a longer paddle but can offer slightly larger waves on smaller days. Access to Uluwatu involves navigating a steep staircase down the cliff to a cave, which serves as the primary entry and exit point. The spot features a coral reef bottom and can be surfed at all tides, though conditions vary. Uluwatu is known for its epic quality waves but can get ultra crowded, especially during the dry season from April to October. It’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Always assess your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Uluwatu’s challenging conditions and sharp reef bottom necessitate caution and respect for the environment.
