About this Spot
Balian is a surf spot located in Bali, Indonesia. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Balian Beach is situated on Bali’s west coast in Lalanglinggah Village, Selemadeg Barat District, Tabanan Regency, about 1.5 hours drive from Kuta. The spot features a river mouth break with waves ranging from knee-high to triple overhead. The main peak is an A-frame wave, with the left typically slower and offering long rides to the shore, while the right is faster and may produce barrels. Balian’s waves are surfable across all tides, with mid to high tide often providing optimal conditions. The beach’s unique topography, influenced by the river’s deep-water channel, amplifies incoming swells, ensuring surfable waves throughout the year. Mornings typically bring offshore winds, contributing to clean wave faces. The beach features a two-kilometer stretch of black sand. Access to the surf is facilitated by channels on either side of the peak. Balian is known as a regional classic spot with a rocky bottom, suitable for all levels of experience. The spot typically has few surfers and offers wave lengths of 50-150 meters. Nearby spots include Yeh Leh, Yeh Gangga, Kedungu, Tanah Lot, and Pulakan Right. When surfing Balian, it’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the best experience, consider surfing in the early morning as onshore winds often arrive around 11:00 am. Remember to be cautious of potential pollution from stormwater runoff, particularly after heavy rains. Balian offers a versatile and consistent surfing experience in a more relaxed setting compared to Bali’s busier surf spots.
