About this Spot

Pu`u Poa is a surf spot located in Kauai, Hawaii. This spot is situated on the north shore of Kauai, directly in front of the St. Regis Princeville Resort. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Pu`u Poa features a coral reef bottom and can be surfed at all tides. It’s considered a regional classic with a wave length of 150 to 300 meters. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and experiences regular wave frequency. Typically, there are few surfers in the lineup, but it’s always important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette. To access Pu`u Poa, turn right off Kuhio Hwy into the Princeville neighborhood and follow the road for about 2 miles. Just before reaching the St. Regis Hotel, there’s a small 10-car parking lot on the right. From there, take the trail down the fence line, but be cautious as the stairs have been eroding due to heavy rain. The trail leads to a small beach where you can paddle out. Be careful at low tide when navigating through coral heads. The paddle out can take over 20 minutes, or you can access the spot by boat. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertow, rocks, and sharks. It’s advisable not to surf alone and to lock your car. Nearby surf spots include Hanalei Bay, Waikokos, Anini Beach, Tunnels, and Kalihiwai Point. During summer months, the offshore coral reef generally makes the area safe for swimming and snorkeling. However, winter swells can bring dangerous conditions. The beach offers views of Hanalei Bay and surrounding mountains, with trees providing shaded areas. Remember to check the latest surf forecast and report before your session. While no webcam information is available, a surf map can help you locate the exact spot. Always prioritize safety and respect for the environment when surfing at Pu`u Poa.
