About this Spot
DT Flemming is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated in Honokahua Bay on Maui’s northwest coast, featuring a long stretch of white sand bordered by ironwood trees. The beach is approximately 1,500 feet long and 150 feet wide. DT Flemming is known as a regional classic surf spot with a sand and rock bottom. It’s suitable for all experience levels and can be surfed at all tides. The spot rarely breaks and when it does, the wave length is typically less than 50m. Crowds are usually sparse, with few surfers in the lineup. During the winter season, DT Flemming can produce solid waves, with reports of 8-12 foot faces. The spot features multiple breaks, including a heavy shorebreak on the far left, a big left break on the left point, and a fast, smooth right point break that can offer nice barrels and long rides. However, the spot is inconsistent and may not provide good surf conditions for extended periods. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, pollution, and sharks. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. DT Flemming Beach Park offers amenities like restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards on duty daily. The beach is accessible via two large parking lots. Nearby surf spots include Ironwood Beach, Slaughterhouse, Honolua Bay, Napili Bay, and Little Makaha. The beach is named after David Thomas Fleming, who introduced pineapple cultivation to West Maui in the early 1900s. In 2003, DT Flemming was named America’s Best Beach.
