About this Spot
Honolua Bay is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides right waves. It’s situated on Maui’s northwest coast and is part of the Honolua-Mokuleʻia Marine Life Conservation District. The bay is known for its world-class surf break, particularly during the winter months from October to April. Honolua Bay features a coral reef bottom and works on all tides. It’s considered a world-class quality wave, suitable for intermediate surfers. The spot is very consistent and offers rides between 50 to 150 meters long. The surf break is divided into several sections, including Coconuts, The Cave, and Keiki Bowl, each offering different wave characteristics. Honolua Bay is best surfed when North Pacific groundswells reach the area, with ideal conditions including swell direction from NNW to NNE and offshore winds from ENE to SE. The spot can get crowded, especially when the waves are good. It’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as reef, current, and sharks. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access to the surf spot involves a dirt road along the bluff, with parking being a challenge during good surf conditions. The bay has a rich surfing history, with early surfers like Don and Tario Uchimura in the late 1930s and Woody Brown in the early 1940s. Honolua Bay hosts the annual Billabong Pipe women’s surf competition in December. When visiting, be cautious of urchins and rips/undertow. The walk down to the water can be treacherous, so take care. It’s advisable to lock up valuables and not leave anything visible in your vehicle. From Honolua, you can view the islands of Molokai and Lanai.
