Overview
About this Spot
Paia Bay is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated on Maui’s North Shore and is known for its near-shore surf break. The beach features a sandy bottom with some rocks, making it suitable for surfing at all tide levels. Paia Bay is considered a regional classic and can accommodate surfers of all experience levels. The waves here sometimes break, with a length of less than 50m. The spot typically sees few surfers, but it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when it’s crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. During winter, the surf can become huge with dangerous rip currents, so caution is advised. The waves at Paia Bay can be deceiving, sometimes looking big but losing power just before breaking. With a bigger swell, the spot can have strong currents and powerful sets. The main breaks are located in the middle, right outside the bay. For the middle break, surfers can line up with the basketball courts on shore. There’s also a break far out to the right, which requires a long paddle but can be rewarding. A left break can be found towards the protruding rocks, past the Youth/Teen center on shore. Paia Bay offers amenities such as a large parking lot, grassy areas, basketball courts, a skateboard park, picnic tables, restrooms, and showers. However, there’s no lifeguard on duty. The spot is accessible from the town of Paia, where surf rentals are available. It’s advisable to be vigilant about personal belongings, as theft can occur in the area. The water quality can be murky at times. Paia Bay is part of Maui, the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Maui is known for its significant tourism industry and is often referred to as the ‘Valley Isle’ due to its unique geography formed by two volcanic features: Haleakalā and the West Maui Mountains.
